The masked men were waiting in a
car outside the Royal Bank of Scotland stem in Cleland's Main Street when a G4S
safety van inwards just after 2pm.
One of the
thieves followed a safety guard into the bank and in danger him with a firearm.
The man
demanded the protector hand over a case containing an undisclosed quantity previous
to running out of the bank and into a black Volkswagen Golf GTI which sped off
in the bearing of Shotts.
The firearm
was not fired and unknown was offended in the mugging but staff and customers
in the bank were left surprised by the robbery.
The car,
which was later found burnt out in Stawstonfoot Road, was detained by police who
plan to bring out forensic tests on the automobile.
Detective
Chief Inspector Pat Campbell said:"It's essential we catch the men accountable
for this stealing.
Brandishing
a firearm in broad daylight is completely offensive and the penalty could have
been much graver.
"It is probable
the black Golf GTI that was used by the suspects may have been in the area
prior to the robbery, and I would request to anyone who saw it to phone us.
"We are
checking CCTV and already, a number of people have come forward to help with
the examination, however I'd still cheer anyone who has any in sequence to
contact CID at Wishaw Police Office on 01698 202 600."
An
eyewitness told STV News: "I was passing the RBS branch in Cleland at approximately
3pm and there was about four police cars and vans, alongside police tape.
"There
were police officers standing outside the bank with who I'm guessing were
members of staff and several men in suits with clipboards. There was too a
white van with a photographer who kept going in and out of the bank.
"There's
police going back and forth to the bank, a woman taking statements from inhabitants
in the area and a police helicopter was also searching the area previous."
Both the
robbers were wearing dark clothing and masks.
